Power supplies for medical-adjacent and laboratory equipment

Equipment used in clinical environments falls into two distinct regulatory buckets, and choosing the right power supply depends on which bucket your device sits in.

Devices in direct patient contact (BF/CF applied parts under IEC/EN 60601-1) require certified medical supplies with 2× MOPP isolation, leakage current below 100 µA and full Declaration of Conformity paperwork. The much larger group of medical-adjacent equipment - dental compressors, lab analysers, sterilisers, vet diagnostics, pharmacy fridges, hospital admin and signage - typically sits behind a Class I or Class II AC inlet without a patient-contact requirement, and is well served by the standard Mascot linear and switch-mode range.

Class II construction (no protective-earth dependency), wide-input AC, very low ripple and the documentation trail Mascot supplies as standard make them a sensible default.

What to look for

Can I use a standard Mascot linear supply in a piece of medical equipment?
Yes, provided the equipment itself does not have an IEC 60601-1 patient-applied part. The standard Mascot 8421 / 2083 / 2183 / 6823 linear range is Class II constructed (no earth dependency), low-ripple and CE/UKCA marked - exactly the right specification for dental, vet, pharmacy and lab equipment that sits behind a 230V inlet without a direct patient connection. Do you supply the EN 60601-1 declaration of conformity?
For our certified-medical Models, yes - every IEC 60601-1 rated unit ships with the manufacturer's Declaration of Conformity, and we can supply the supporting test reports on request for your technical file. What does '2× MOPP' actually mean?
Two independent Means of Patient Protection - typically reinforced insulation between mains and the patient-applied part, plus an isolation transformer providing a second barrier. If either single fault occurs the patient is still protected. It's the modern (IEC 60601-1 3rd edition) replacement for the older single-fault tolerance language.
Why use a linear supply in a lab setting?
Lab instruments - spectrophotometers, low-current measurement, electrochemistry rigs - are unforgiving of broadband switching noise. A linear supply has no high-frequency switching stage and produces only a small 100 Hz / 120 Hz mains ripple that's easy to filter and well below the noise floor of most analogue front-ends.
