What to look for

• Continuous power rating. Rate the SMPS for the continuous DC watts your load draws, then add 20% headroom for ageing and thermal derating in enclosed installs.
• Input voltage range. Universal-input models (90–264V AC) work worldwide; narrow-input models are slightly cheaper but only suitable for one region.
• Approvals class. Class II (double-insulated, no earth) is fine for most desk-top uses; medical applications need EN 60601-1 with 2×MOPP isolation; IT/AV loads need EN 62368.
• EMC and ripple. Broadcast, audio, RF and medical loads benefit from low-ripple filtered outputs and Class B EMC. Mascot's professional-grade SMPS units meet both as standard.
• Connector and cable length. Fixed DC leads with the right jack or locking connector eliminate a whole class of field failures — specify the correct output connector at order.

What is a switch-mode power supply?

A switch-mode power supply (SMPS) uses high-frequency switching transistors to convert mains AC into regulated DC. It delivers far higher efficiency, lower heat and smaller size than a traditional linear transformer-based supply.

Switch-mode vs linear — which do I need?

Switch-mode is the default for almost every modern application because of its efficiency and size. Linear supplies are still preferred for the lowest-noise audio, precision measurement and some RF applications where switching residuals matter.

Are your SMPS units safe for medical use?

Can I use a UK SMPS in the EU or US?

Universal-input models (90–264V AC, 47–63Hz) work worldwide — you only need to change the AC plug head. Mascot's interchangeable-head range makes this a snap-fit swap in the field.

What's the difference between constant voltage and constant current?

A constant-voltage SMPS holds output volts fixed regardless of load (standard for equipment power). A constant-current supply holds current fixed — used for LED drivers, battery charging and electroplating.
